Purpose

The RPR18-type pavement marking retroreflectometer is an open-optical-path, portable field measurement instrument designed to assess the retroreflective brightness coefficient of road markings. The unit of measurement is mcd/(m² · cd). Its primary feature lies in simulating the scenario where a vehicle travels on a highway at night, with headlights illuminating pavement markings (made from retroreflective materials). The instrument measures the brightness perceived by the driver inside the cab after the light is reflected off these markings. The key parameter evaluated is the nighttime retroreflective brightness coefficient, commonly referred to as the RL value. This instrument can measure the retroreflective brightness coefficients under three distinct conditions: dry RL, wet RL, and continuous rainfall RLa.
