Used to determine the surface structure depth of asphalt pavements and un-grooved concrete pavements, in order to assess the skid resistance of the pavement. The principle is to spread dry sand of known volume and specified particle size into a circular area on the pavement surface. The ratio of the volume of sand to the average area of the covered surface is referred to as the pavement structure depth, measured in millimeters.
